PAST PAPER QUESTIONS
2a) Explain what the acronym BARB stands for and what the organisation does. (2)
BARB stands for Broadcasters' Audience Research Board. The organisation collects viewing figures and statistics for all the big UK broadcasters like BBC and Sky.
3a) Explain why an independent company often works with other companies as part of a joint venture. Use examples to support your answer.(4)
Not all films have the luxury of being conglomerates, when one parent company owns smaller subsidiaries, so independent companies may choose to be part of a joint venture. This is when one media company works for another company as part of a project, mutually benefitting both parties. This can be benefitting as both parties can specialise in different areas of production such as co-producing and distributing the rights, making the overall project quicker and more efficient. One example of this Street Dance 3D, a production between BBC Films and Vertical Films. BBC Films, acquired the rights to distribute the film, whilst BBC Films co-produced it.
3b) Explain two disadvantages of being an independent company. Use examples to support your answer. (6)
1) One disadvantage of being an independent company is that you can assume they don't have as much money and budget as a conglomerates or major parent companies. Therefore, they would have to use a joint venture to get the funds for a bigger project and as a source of money. One example of this is StreetDance, who is a joint venture project involving the BCC and Vertigo Films.
2) Another disadvantage of being an independent company is that it may be harder to distribute or market your project to a mass audience. This is because you can assume these independent companies have less of a following or presence online and it would be very costly for the company to create attention, therefore they would use conglomerate companies to help the film/project gain more popularity. One example of this is Worlds End, a joint venture between Working Title and Universal.
